Nankai University

Nankai University, a key comprehensive university directly under the State Education Commission, is the Alma Mater of the respected and beloved Premier Zhou Enlai. The university, founded in 1919 by the patriotic famous educators Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu, takes "Dedication to Public Interests, Acquisition of All-round Capability, Aspiration for Progress with Each Passing Day" as the university motto and has fine school spirit of patriotism, innovation, friendship and so on.

Nankai University is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university of social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, management science, life sciences, medical science and arts, etc. Following the guiding ideology for teaching of " taking quality seriously, training capability, strengthening fundamentals, broadening specialities, managing strictly, ensuring quality", the university formed its own school-running characteristic of paying same attention on arts and science, having broad and solid fundamentals, as well as stressing on application and innovation.

Nankai University has a total area 2,100 mu, of which 650,000 square meters are the floorage. The University has 6 National Key Laboratories and Open Laboratories, as well as hundreds of teaching laboratories. Two University's Libraries have a collection of 2,800,000 books and large Multimedia Electronic Information Services Section ranking among the most advanced in the universities and colleges of china, as well as the computer information net covering the whole university.

Nankai University gained, among the first group of Chinese Universities, the competitive entry into the national " 211 project" . And in 1999, it was chosen as the excellent university for its undergraduate teaching by Ministry of Education.

The University has 1,600 full-time teachers, among whom are 6 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 232 PHD tutors, 471 professors, and 687 associate professors. The student enrollment is some 17,000.

The University is entitled to confer Master's degrees in 87 programs and doctoral degrees in 47 programs. Besides, it has set up 11 centers for post-doctoral studies. The university has 7 national key disciplinaries. Organic chemistry, high polymer chemistry, basic mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, physics, ancient and modern history, international district and country history, political economy, international economy, international finance, etc. are designated by the State Education Commission as National Bases for Research and Personnel Training of Basic Disciplines.

In the "211 project", the key programs are: element-organic and organometallic, chemistry, functional materials chemistry, mathematics, modern economics, international economics, Chinese social history, history of Asia-Pacific area, optical information science and photoelectric technology.

The university consists of 14 specialized schools, including College of Economics, College of International Business, College of Law and Political Science, College of Humanities, College of Chinese Language and Culture, College of Foreign Languages, College of Chemistry, College of Mathematical Science, College of Life Sciences, College of Medicine, College of Information Science and Technology, College of Education of Marxist- Leninist Theories, College of Physical Science and College of Environmental Science and Engineering.
